Lenovo ThinkReality VRX

Design System and Product Experience

Design system for immersive XR interfaces, focused on creating a cohesive visual language and accessible experience for Lenovo’s ThinkReality platform.

ROLE

UX Visual Designer

CONTEXT

The ThinkReality XR platform required a dedicated design system to support spatial interfaces, including 3D environments, transparent backgrounds, and varying viewing distances. While it was initially developed alongside Lenovo’s core design system (Cake), this subsystem evolved to address the unique challenges of designing for immersive environments.

My Role

As the visual lead on Lenovo’s UX Emerging Technologies team, I helped define the foundational visual language for the XR interface. I contributed early UI concepts that shaped the direction of the system and led the development of a custom icon set, informed by in-person usability testing at Lenovo’s North Carolina headquarters.

Design System Foundations

Accessibility and legibility were central to the system. I explored size, weight, and contrast across typography and iconography to ensure clarity across different depths and lighting conditions in XR.

These decisions were validated through in-person testing, helping us establish comfortable and readable ranges for users. The goal was to create a system that felt consistent, while still adapting to the unique constraints of immersive environments.

Applying the System to Product

The design system informed the structure and behavior of the XR interface, including navigation patterns, spatial layouts, and interaction feedback.

I applied the system to key product surfaces such as the XR dock, system panels, and notifications, ensuring consistency while adapting to spatial constraints.

Outcome

The XR design system was implemented across the ThinkReality A3 and ThinkReality VRX headsets, both showcased at Lenovo Tech World and AWE.

The ThinkReality VRX software received multiple design awards, including the GOOD DESIGN Award (2023). The system has continued to evolve and has informed later iterations of collaborative XR experiences.
